Diary of Rev. David Todd Stewart, 1854.

Diary of Rev. D.T. Stuart, a Presbyterian minister and headmaster of Stuart's Female College in Shelbyville, Kentucky. Stuart writes that the purpose of his diary is to "write down each day such occurrences and reflections as I may deem sufficiently important." Generally, Stuart discusses management of the school, the disposition of the female students, anxiety about his own children, and his thoughts on preaching and other religious matters. Other topics discussed include: temperance, the "Know Nothing" party, teaching methods, cholera, the possible invasion of Cuba, and a solar eclipse that occurred on 26 May 1854.

Shelbyville, Ky. girls school. The school was established in 1825 by Julia Ann Tevis. She and her husband, Reverend John Tevis, ran the school until his death in 1860. In 1879, Julia Tevis sold the school to Dr. Wiley Taul Poynter and Doctor T.W. Jordan. In 1880 Jordan sold his interest in the school to Poynter.
